How to Use Polyflex to Repair Expansion Joints and Concrete Cracks

How-To Repair Expansion Joints and Concrete Cracks

Polyflex is a two-component, rapid-curing, self-leveling, flexible polyurethane sealant manufactured by KwikBond for repairing expansion joints and cracks in industrial and commercial buildings. Here are the steps to follow to apply Polyflex for repairing expansion joints and cracks:

Step 1: Surface Preparation

The surface to be repaired should be clean, dry, and free of any loose particles, oil, grease, or other contaminants. Use a wire brush, grinder, or other mechanical means to remove any loose material, dust, or debris from the crack or joint. If the surface is heavily contaminated with oil or grease, clean it with a suitable degreaser and then rinse it thoroughly with water.

Step 2: Priming

If the surface is porous or highly absorbent, it is recommended to prime the surface with KwikBond’s primer before applying Polyflex. The primer helps to improve adhesion, reduce bubbling, and prevent premature curing of the sealant.

Step 3: Mixing

Polyflex is a two-component system that needs to be mixed before application. Mix the two components in the correct proportion, as specified by the manufacturer, using a mechanical mixer until a uniform color is achieved.

Step 4: Application

Apply Polyflex using a caulking gun or other suitable dispensing tool. Apply the sealant to the joint or crack, ensuring that the sealant is slightly above the level of the surrounding surface. Use a putty knife or trowel to smooth the sealant and ensure good adhesion.

Step 5: Finishing

After application, smooth the surface of the sealant with a putty knife or trowel to ensure that it is level with the surrounding surface. Remove any excess sealant with a solvent such as Xylene.

Step 6: Curing

Polyflex has a rapid curing time of 24 hours. Allow the sealant to cure fully before exposing it to foot or vehicular traffic.
